Preparing for your first board seat

What boards look for in a first-time director, and how executives can get ready well before the call comes.
Most first-time directors are appointed because of a specific skill the board is missing: finance, technology, a market the company wants to enter. Knowing which gap you fill is the first step.
Boards also want evidence that you understand the difference between running a business and overseeing one. Experience on a subsidiary board, an advisory board or a not-for-profit board helps show this.
Finally, be clear about time. Board commitments vary by organisation and can increase during a crisis. Discuss the expected commitment and your current employer’s support before starting conversations.
